MOT Advisories: Why Ignoring Them Could Put You at Risk

25th June, 2025

Here at Yateley MOT Centre, we always remind our customers that MOT advisories aren’t just suggestions — they’re early warnings. And now the stats are in: neglecting them can lead to real danger.

A recent RAC survey found that one in six motorists who didn’t act on advisory items later faced a vehicle breakdown or accident. The MOT test evaluates essential systems like brakes, tyres, and lighting. Even when your vehicle passes, you might be handed a list of advisories — items that aren’t an immediate fail but could become serious quickly.

Common examples include brakes that are nearly worn down, or tyres just above the legal tread minimum. Of those surveyed, 44% had received at least one advisory after an MOT in the past year — yet over half (54%) didn’t act on them.

RAC’s servicing expert Nick Mullender emphasized: “Advisories mean the vehicle isn’t in top condition. Ignoring them is risky — the issue could escalate in a matter of weeks.”

Data from the Department for Transport shows that vehicle defects contributed to 1,865 injuries and 39 fatalities on UK roads in 2023, making it the worst year since 2018 for defect-related incidents.

Our advice at Yateley MOT Centre? Don’t delay — book a service or inspection if your MOT raised any advisories. It could prevent costly damage and keep you and your passengers safe.
